Robert was born in Berlin in January of 1952, shortly after the end of World War II. As a result, he never really knew a united Germany, and he grew up in East Berlin. His family were nice people, if scared, and he had a decent childhood. He went to Polytechnical School and learned (somewhat fragmented) English and Russian, then went to vocational school and then took the exams in order to go to university to become an engineer. He was never the brightest student, but he was diligent, so he did fairly well and got in. While he was at university, he met a girl named Helena through a blind date his friends set up for him, and promptly fell in love. They were married just a year later, and in 1975 they had a daughter named Karin. Robert doted on the little girl, nearly neglecting the twins the couple had later in her favor, although he was never a bad father by any means. Eventually Robert got the idea to move the family to West Berlin. After all, it'd be safer and a better life for the children and his darling little girl. So the two made plans to meet at a prearranged spot one night, but Helena and the family never arrived. Robert assumed they had been caught by the guards and crossed alone, broken inside. He set up a life as an engineer on the other side, but he was never quite the same. When the Wall fell, it felt more like tragedy than anything else, and he began to blame himself for what he assumed had happened to his family - if he had only waited a few years, they could've crossed safely. |

Once a proud father and a man content with his life, over the years Robert has transformed into a somber and sullen man who rarely smiles. Robert has always been a quiet fellow, but time has changed him, and not only is Robert quiet, he now keeps to himself, refusing to open up to people again. Robert used to be a sympathetic man, too, but that has also changed; now he bottles his feelings and struggles to make connections with people. With a bad tendency to drown out the world around him, he comes across as much more apathetic than he really is. The truth is, though, Robert isn't doing this on purpose. He is so haunted by the knowledge that his family died ( or so he thinks ) that his very will to live has been crushed beyond reason. It appears like Robert walks through life day after day in a daze, mourning his wife, children, and the future they could've had. At the very core of Robert's being, he is a deeply sentimental person. His emotions aren't dead; they're merely repressed. Even if they may be gone, Robert is still deeply in love with Helena, and with his children - Karin in particular. He is fond of children and young people in general – their simple joy and innocence always makes him smile. He is also a diligent, intelligent worker. Robert struggles to keep his mind focused, but he is talented at what he does. He isn't much of a multitasker, though. Once he commits himself to a task, he won't start another one until his present one is finished, no matter how long it may take. |

Robert is a handsome man, around six feet in height with a pale complexion and a lean build. His hair is black and falls over one eye, and is always neatly tended to. His eyes are a pale blue shade, almost purple in certain lights, and fairly thin. His features are handsome, if a bit thin. He tends to wear navy blue suits, all of which are neatly pressed and cared for. His posture is straight, almost rigid, and his general facial expression is blank, if anything. |
